Focus On.. CHOKLATE
Born in Seattle, WA and raised in San Diego, CA, Choklate has always, in one way or another, been involved with music or dance. The newest soul singer on the independent soul scene was raised on Gospel, solely, but was introduced to hip-hop by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince’s ‘Parents Just Don’t Understand’. “It was the first ‘worldy’ song and only video allowed in the house. I used to sneak and listen to the radio so low that all I could hear sometimes was the beat. I called it ‘Music Deprivation Disease’.
Over the years, while living in Seattle, Choklate honed her craft, as a resident at ‘Jumbalaya’, the longest running and most popular improve weekly in the history of Seattle. In between time Choklate wrote and recorded her full length self titled debut album that was released in May 2006 and garnered national and international attention from fans, DJs, tastemakers and producers worldwide.
Her debut album ‘Choklate’ has a different kick, having a sound that’s been quite the challenge for those who are addicted to labeling, particularly those who would like to put a stamp on her sound. The record was recorded over a learning period and featured production by Seattle’s finest producers: Vitamin D, Bean One, Jake One, Kuddie Mack, Amos Miller and Jay Townsend. Being the prolific songwriter that she is, Choklate wrote and vocally arranged all of the songs on her album.
Since the release of her debut, Choklate has solidified her place alongside such soul luminaries as Raheem Devaughn, Dwele, Yahzarah, Anthony David, Sy Smith, Bilal, Eric Roberson, Sharon Jones and Res to name a few. Choklate has also guest appeared and been sighted on Boom Bap Project, Blacksheep, Abstract Rude, Butta Verses, De La Soul, Gift of Gab, Supanatural and Chali 2na’s solo records and is anxiously awaiting the opportunity to work with more of her peers. Choklate's sophomore album 'To Whom it may concern' was released in May 2009.
As a rising new favorite amongst her peers and soul connoisseurs alike, captivating fans, DJs, tastemakers and producers around the globe, Choklate continues her journey and sharing the many facets of presenting her music to audiences while freely expressing herself in ways that reveal and embody her true essence.
“You release me to be everything I want to be, you pull out of me the very thing I’ve been searching for in me” – Choklate from ‘This Ones Dedicated To The Music’
